Art Inspired by the Highland Cows of Elgol

My life as an illustator on the Isle of Skye

Hiya! I’m Jazz Buchanan, an illustrator based in Elgol, a small but breathtakingly beautiful village on the Isle of Skye. Every day, I wake up surrounded by stunning landscapes, incredible wildlife, and the iconic Highland cows that roam the single-track roads near my home. These shaggy-haired, gentle giants are a constant source of inspiration for my artwork, which celebrates the beauty of Scottish nature, landscapes, and local wildlife.

Inspiration at My Doorstep

Living in Elgol means I don’t have to go far to find creative inspiration. The changing light of the sunrises and sunsets, the mist rolling over the Cuillin mountains, and the ever-present Highland cattle all feed into my work. Whether it’s a golden sunrise casting a glow over the mountains or a Highland cow lazily watching the world go by (occasionally blocking the only road into Elgol), these moments find their way into my illustrations.

If you ever visit Elgol on the Isle of Skye, you might even come across a brightly painted Highland cow statue by the roadside. This cheerful landmark was originally painted by me to help raise funds for Highland Hospice and has even more color and a bit of fun to the village! Right next to it, you’ll find my honesty box gift shop, where I sell a range of Skye and Highland cow-inspired souvenirs, including:
